A Clifton man has been charged after an incident where a teen was taken against her will and sexually assaulted, according to deputies.

Clarence Grubbs, 28, is charged with kidnapping and first-degree criminal sexual conduct in connection with the incident, Spartanburg County deputies said.

On Wednesday afternoon, deputies said they received a call from a local hospital in reference to a report of a sexual assault. The 19-year-old victim said she was taken against her will to the Clifton area where she was sexually assaulted, deputies said.

The victim was walking on John B. White Boulevard in Spartanburg when Grubbs offered her a ride, according to the deputy's incident report.

The victim said Grubbs was driving a Chevy Caprice that was green, but also had other colors painted on the side, and possibly sketches of cartoon characters that were newly painted or ready to be painted on, deputies said.

Grubbs then drove the teen to a cemetery where the man tried to have sex with the teen, deputies said. After she declined, the man said he had a gun under the seat and he would use it if she did not let him have sex with her, the deputy's report stated.

Deputies said Grubbs then had sexual intercourse with the teen against her will.

Investigators were then able to identify Grubbs as a suspect in the case, deputies said.

On Thursday, Grubbs was awaiting a bond hearing. His bond is set at a total of $45,000; $15,000 for kidnapping and $30,000 for criminal sexual conduct
