Nineteen-year-old Elijah Coleman is being remembered as a very active, curious person.

"[He] liked long walks, especially swinging. Take him to the park, he'd swing for hours," said Elijah's mother, Chanetella Coleman.

Early Tuesday morning, Elijah was walking along southbound I-75 between the Collingwood Boulevard on-ramp and the South Avenue exit ramp, when he was struck and killed by a car.

Elijah had autism, so his family installed an extensive home security system to keep him from wandering off. He left the house because the system was turned off.

"I have older kids," Coleman said. "They were in and out, so I didn't turn it on because it would just sound off all night when they're coming in. The last one to come in would be my 18-year-old, and he didn't turn it on when he came in."

What happened to Elijah continues to haunt his mother. She's now planning his funeral.

"He's going to be truly missed," she said. "I can't imagine waking up every day and not seeing him, because I pretty much had to do everything for him and with him."

After the driver of the car hit Elijah, they left the scene of the accident and called Toledo Police from home. No charges have been filed against the driver, but the case will be presented to a Lucas County grand jury.
