Deputies: Reports of door-to-door kidnappers unfounded

Posted: Updated:

Door-to-door salesmen make their way into neighborhoods all the time, trying to sell goods.

But more and more lately, there's a chance you've heard stories online or in your neighborhoods of salesmen trying to kidnap children.

It sounds far-fetched, but those stories have caught the attention of law enforcement and people across the Upstate.

"I can see where that might scare somebody who might be a little overprotective," said parent Jennifer Borders.

Borders admits those stories aren't worth much to her.

"I've lived in more than a few places where a kid coming by is going is all, 'I'm doing this for such and such organization,'" she said. "And they have to have identification for that kind of thing."

But are those stories true?

In Greenville County, deputies said there was only one incident that was suspicious. It happened last week in Marrietta.

"An individual had come to the door and claimed they were there to sell children's books. This is information we were given from the caller," said Master Deputy Jonathan Smith with the Greenville County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said the man also asked about other homes in the neighborhood before going on his way, but no kidnappings and no crimes were reported.

Deputies also said that the person that made the call to 911 about the suspicious activity declined to file a report on the incident.

"We're not going to be made aware of it unless somebody lets us know what's going on," said Smith. "If you feel uncomfortable about something in your neighborhood, call us."

Smith said that call led to more patrols in that Marrietta neighborhood, but deputies emphasize the need for people to be aware of their surroundings.
