Nostalgia Day held in Palmer

PALMER, MA (WSHM) -

Around 1,000 residents gathered at Legion Field on Saturday to regain that feeling of nostalgia during the eighth annual Nostalgia Day.

It was a day filled with food, classic cars and music.

One of the goals of Nostalgia Day is to restore history for modern residents of Palmer.

In the past, the event has had horse-drawn carriages and trolleys to show how vital those were to life in the town.

Organizers told CBS 3 that Nostalgia Day is about bringing the community together.

"It is a community event, almost a reunion for many," said Bob Haveles, president of Palmer Events. "Even though we live in the same town, we often here stories of, 'oh, we haven't seen so and so in forever'. It's not like they live in a different state. They live right here. It brings our people together from in the community."

Saturday's event was put on by Palmer Events and they said it would not have been possible without many donations from across the community.

Also attending Nostalgia Day was one group that is looking at the town's future. The Citizens for Jobs and Growth in Palmer were out in full force, continuing to try and build support for the proposed $1 billion Mohegan Sun casino resort in the town.

The group said a host agreement with the casino should be done this coming week.

After watching the progress of MGM in Springfield and Hard Rock in West Springfield, the group said they are ready for it to be their turn.

"We saw what everyone else had, so we were able to take that and probably come up with a much better plan that is actually better for the people of Palmer and the town of Palmer itself," said Robert Young, spokesman for Palmer Businesses for a Palmer Casino. "Instead of just throwing a bunch of money at it. They are going to be very specific within the agreement."

If the Mohegan Sun host agreement is complete this week, the group believes a vote in the town would be scheduled some time in late October.
