Unemployment in South Carolina was unchanged in July.
The state Department of Employment and Workforce said Monday that last month's jobless rate was steady at 8.1 percent. That's a more than a full percentage point lower than this time a year ago.
Non-farm payroll employment in South Carolina was nearly 1.9 million. The department says that's this year's highest level and is 1,700 jobs higher than June.
Professional and business services jobs were up by 3,100 in July. The leisure and hospitality sector added 800 jobs.
National unemployment went down from 7.6 percent to 7.4 percent in July.
North Carolina's unemployment rate has increased slightly for the first time since January.
The state Commerce Department said Monday the jobless rate for July was 8.9%, or an increase of 0.1 of a percentage point compared with the month before. The national rate fell to 7.4% in July.
The state agency says North Carolina employers dropped nearly 14,000 jobs from June to July, with the largest decline in the government sector at more than 5,000. Transportation and utility fields and hospitality services saw the largest employment sector gains.
The state rate was 9.5% in January but had been slowly declining until now.
