UNION, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A mother and her boyfriend were charged with cruelty to children on Saturday, according to the Union County Police Department.

Taneesha Jeter, 25 , and Courtney Rice, 20, were both charged after an incident where Jeter's 6-year-old daughter was whipped with a belt, police said.

Police said they saw red marks on the girl's arm and leg, that appeared to be from a belt. The victim told police that her arm and leg were burned from the belt mark, according to the incident report.

According to the police report, the victim said she had been whipped with a belt by Rice, causing injuries.

Deputies said Rice first hit the girl with a cloth belt but Jeter advised him that it was not doing anything, so Jeter got a pink plastic belt and started whipping her with it.

Jeter later took back the statement and said she only admitted to hitting her daughter to prevent Rice from going to jail, according to the police report. The victim also said her mother, Jeter, never hit her with a belt.

Rice first told police that the girl was misbehaving and the girl ran out of the house where she fell, according to police. After being told that the girl said he hit her with a belt, Rice said he did swing a belt at her, but was unsure if it had hit her, police said in their report.
