GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Duke Energy is warning customers about fake calls from people claiming to work for the utility provider demanding immediate payment.

The company said customers have received calls from someone claiming to work for Duke Energy saying their power will be disconnected if they don't pay a fee immediately.

The person tells the customer to buy a prepaid debit card then call them back to make the payment by giving them the card's number and PIN.

Duke said the scammers have even replicated their service number to show up on the victim's caller ID or falsely claims to work for a third-party collection agency hired by Duke.

The company said they never ask or require customers with unpaid or delinquent accounts to buy a prepaid debit card to avoid disconnection. They also said customers will be notified throughout several weeks about disconnection, never an hour beforehand.

Anyone who may have received these calls is asked to report it to their local police department immediately and notify Duke Energy. Customers in the Carolinas can call 800-777-9898 and Duke Energy Progress customers in the Carolinas can call 800-452-2777.

Customers may hear about the scam from Duke Energy on the radio as the company plans an educational campaign to combat it.
