LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Two people are dead after they were struck by lightning in Madison County. There were also other reports of people injured across the state.
Wednesday afternoon tragedy struck the small community of Buckeye. Two men died around 2:30 p.m. after they were hit by lightning and a third victim was injured. A barn nearby was also struck.
Straight up Interstate 75, in Petersburg, Kentucky, lightening struck the zipline at the Creation Museum.
"Somehow electricity jumped to one of the lines and one of our staff, zip line employees was on the ground holding on to one of the lines and got knocked down," said Mike Zovath, Creation Museum.
That employee was taken to the hospital, but only suffered some tingling to his hands. "There are far more people killed by lightning each year than tornados, hurricanes, many of the big disasters that we think of," said Kevin Harned, WAVE 3 Chief Meteorologist.
According to the National Weather Service before Wednesday's deadly strikes, 14 have died this year alone across the country by lightning.
"The number one location that had the most fatalities in the last six years would be fishing, that was followed by camping and boating," said Harned.
Harned says, while it may sound simple, the best way to protect yourself is to head indoors when you hear thunder.
"We don't pay attention until it hits close to home and then we realize wow that could happen here," said Harned.
