SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Spartanburg Public Safety is asking drivers to avoid traveling on Pine Street between Country Club Road and Forest Avenue until 2:45 p.m. Friday because of a gas leak in the area.

Spartanburg police and members of the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office said they will remove several road blocks at that time.

Pine Street from Forest Avenue to Country Club was closed to all traffic just after noon.

Police asked drivers to use Union Street until normal traffic flow could be restored.

Police said a construction crew was doing some drilling when they cut a Piedmont Natural Gas line.

Our crew at the scene reported seeing a major gas cloud visible over Pine Street.

Business and residential structures in the immediate area were evacuated as a precaution, according to police.

Police said all residents will be allowed to return to the area after 2:45 p.m.
