A staggering number of students were arrested in the Tempe Police Department's Safe and Sober campaign, which targeted alcohol-related crimes and safety of youth.
The department completed its first three days of the campaign Aug. 15 through 17 and again during a second enforcement this past weekend, said Tempe Police Department spokesman Michael Pooley.
The department released the following numbers from the first weekend:
371 total arrests
867 total citations
1,421 total contacts or stops
91 total DUI arrests (17 extreme DUIs, 14 DUIs for drugs, two aggravated DUIs, 6 DUIs for under 21 years old)
0.131 percent average blood alcohol content
111 minor in possession of alcohol arrests
5 minors in possession of alcohol
54 loud party calls for service
16 nuisance notices
14 party notices w minors in possession of alcohol
This past weekend, there were 486 arrests, bringing the total to 857. More than 15 percent of those arrested this last weekend were DUIs. On top of that, officers broke up 68 loud parties in the latest weekend crackdown. Officers hit the area of Broadway near the 101 especially hard.
Numerous agencies from around the Valley and state participated in the DUI Task Force, including police departments from Chandler, Gilbert, Glendale, Mesa and Scottsdale, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, Arizona Department of Public Safety and the Governor's Office of Highway Safety.
