CHESNEE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright said deputies arrested a suspect after he had several brushes with law enforcement Sunday afternoon.

Wright said Chad Hollingsworth, 34, was armed with a knife when he attempted to carjack a woman at an address on South Kentucky Avenue in Chesnee at about noon. Family of the victim said the homeowner, who is about 80 years old, walked in on the suspect in her home stealing her belongings.

Chesnee police responded and got into a scuffle with Hollingsworth, Wright said. During the scuffle, Wright said the suspect was shocked with a stun gun and shots were fired by an officer.

Wright said Hollingsworth was able to get away from the officer and ran to the Hot Spot on Hampton Avenue, where he stole a car.

FOX Carolina spoke with the man whose car was stolen. He said he was shocked officers allowed the suspect to get all the way to the Hot Spot.

"They came all the way from the ABC store and allowed him to walk them and make it all the way up to the Hot Spot where probably 50 people were at," said Mark Bales. "In my opinion they should never have made it to the Hot Spot."

Bales said when Hollingsworth arrived at the gas station, officers ordered the public to go inside.

Bales said the officers then stood with their guns drawn at both sides of the suspect, trying to talk him down while the suspect stood next to Bales' car for nearly 20 minutes. He said Hollingsworth then suddenly jumped into his car, which the keys were left in, and drove away while one officer was still on top of the car.

Wright said Hollingsworth led Chesnee officers and assisting deputies from Spartanburg and Cherokee counties on a chase up into Rutherford County, then back into Cherokee and parts of Spartanburg counties. Wright said Hollingsworth was driving at speeds upwards of 130 mph.

At one point, Wright said he ordered deputies to, "Take the suspect out of the case when it was safe to do so."

He said deputies stopped Hollingsworth's car on Casey Creek Road on a bridge over Lake Blalock.

Wright said Hollingsworth again fought with deputies and had to be subdued with a stun gun. Eventually, Wright said deputies were able to subdue Hollingsworth and take him into custody. Hollingsworth was taken to Spartanburg Regional Hospital for a quick observation and then taken to the Detention Center, Wright said.

"We protect citizens and we chase bag guys, and we're very thankful no one in the public got hurt," Wright said about the incident. "We're thankful the suspect didn't get hurt for that matter. We ran him down, wrecked him and put him in jail."

SLED confirmed they are investigating the shooting.

Spartanburg County deputies charged Hollingsworth carjacking, resisting arrest with a deadly weapon, attempted murder, two counts of grand larceny, and burglary.

According to online jail records, he was also charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, failing to stop for blue lights, reckless driving and driving under suspension.

On Monday evening Hollingsworth was denied bond.
