Handmade canoe company relocating to Travelers Rest

Posted: Updated:

A company that builds canoes by hand will soon make their boats and run their operations from the Upstate.

Merrimack Canoe Company plans to move into its new headquarters to Travelers Rest in October, according to the company's owner Andy O'Mara.

O'Mara said they were looking to move the entire business, both production and operations, to a central location to serve their customers across the southeast and chose the Upstate as the best place to be.

Merrimack bought a store front along Main Street in Travelers Rest where they will employ four to five people and hope to increase production from 80 canoes a year to 125 or 150.

Merrimack began production of its canoes in Crossville, TN,  where the company was started by Lem Beach and Scott Hale in 1954. The canoes are now built by Beach's grandson Randy Pew in Crossville, until they move to the Upstate.

The company's current headquarters are in Silver Springs, MD.
