ASHEVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) -

Two drivers died along Interstate 26 Wednesday morning after police said a car driving the wrong way hit a SUV head-on in Asheville.

Sgt. Scott Pruett with Asheville police said at 3:25 a.m. a car was driving westbound on I-26 eastbound near Long Shoals Road.

Pruett said the driver was headed towards a tractor-trailer, which swerved to miss the car. He said the truck clipped the car, which then hit an SUV head-on.

Both the driver of the car and SUV were killed, according to Pruett. The driver of the car was identified by police as 63-year-old Dennis Tornquist, of Brevard, and the SUV's driver was identified as Fredrick King, 61, of Canton.

The crash happened near mile marker 33, near the I-26 and Interstate 40 junction.

The crash closed both eastbound lanes of I-26 until about 7 a.m., when FOX Carolina crews at the scene said authorities had towed away the vehicles involved in the wreck.

The driver of the tractor trailer was not injured. Asheville police are investigating the wreck.
