SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Norfolk Southern said one of its trains hit and killed a Pacolet man who was walking along some Spartanburg County tracks Wednesday night.

The coroner was called to the scene after 10 p.m. The pedestrian was identified as David Missita, 36, by Coroner Rusty Clevenger.

A spokesman for the railroad company said an eastbound train going from Spartanburg to Columbia struck a person near Ivey Lane and Southport Road.

The individual was on the track as the train approached, according to Norfolk Southern.

The spokesman said the trespasser briefly stepped off the track as the train got closer, but then stepped back on the track before they were struck.

The freight train had two engines and 11 cars.
