GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

One person is dead after a robbery at Illusions Smoke Shop on Poinsett Highway in Greenville on Friday, according to Greenville County deputies.

Drew Pinciaro of the Greenville County Sheriff's Office said the clerk was killed during a robbery and died on the scene.

The coroner identified the clerk as Theodore Ross McClellan, 29, of Greenville.

Friends told FOX Carolina that McClellan had just got ownership and reopened the store last week. They said prior to that he had been working three jobs to make ends meet, and he thought opening this business would be his big break.

"I literally talked to him on the phone an hour before the incident. He was on top of the world, said things were finally looking up," said best friend Josh Eskew. "He said he was no longer going to be struggling, he didn't have to worry about money anymore. He made it."

McClellan was well known in Greenville. Friends said he had a magnetic personality.

"Ross was one of the most joyful people to be around. He was always goofing off and making everyone smile, no matter how bad your day was," said friend Tamila Woodard. "He was so full of ambition, he had big plans for the future. I pray that anyone who knows anything about the suspect will please call and help us catch this monster."

Eskew said the victim's family and his friends need justice.

"I don't think you can put into words for his family, myself  and others how important it is to get some closure on this," said Eskew.

Eskew set up a funeral fund for McClellan on Sept. 3. Donations to help with funeral costs can be made at any Bank of Travelers Rest branch under the name Ross McClellan.

Funeral arrangements have been made at the Thomas McAfee Northwest Chapel at 6710 White Horse Rd. Eskew said visitation will be Thursday, Sept. 5, from 12 p.m. to 1:15 p.m., with the funeral and burial directly following.

The funeral will be held in the chapel at 1:30 p.m.

The burial will be at Mountain View Memorial Gardens (formerly Grandview Memorial Park) in Travelers Rest.
