West Valley storm damages costly

AVONDALE, AZ (CBS5) -

Recent monsoon storms hit the Phoenix-metro area with such force, it's going to cost some municipalities thousands of dollars for cleanup and repairs.

In Avondale, Friendship Park is usually home to Friday night Little League games and evening hikers but this Friday, it was empty. A sign in front of the park reads: "Park Closed for Maintenance".

"We've lost about 90 percent of our trees," Avondale Parks and Recreation Director Chris Reams said.

Nearly every tree in the park was either cracked or uprooted from recent storms. Other areas of Avondale were hit just as hard. In another Avondale neighborhood, Molly Liddell witnessed the damage.

"I've never seen that, and I've lived here all my life," Liddell said. "I've never seen that many trees down."

It wasn't just Avondale that was hit hard; Surprise also has several trees down. In Goodyear, 40 trees were tallied as needing repairs in just the city's parks and right-of-ways. A Goodyear city spokesperson said the cleanup and repair bill will likely cost $60,000 to $70,000.

In Litchfield Park, some of the heaviest damage was registered. A city manager said to clean up and repair the city's more than 65 downed trees, the bill is likely to run near $300,000.

At Friendship Park alone in Avondale, the city will be billed near $100,000.

"I was expecting it to be some trees down, like we've had in the past, but nothing like this," Reams said.

Friendship Park will be closed for repairs. City officials say it will likely be two weeks before the park is open to the public again.

Litchfield Park city crews will be providing curbside waste removal until Wednesday, Sept. 4 to allow its residents to dispose of debris from their yards.
