TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Most Toledoans have known it as the Willis B. Boyer, the museum ship docked in International Park in east Toledo.

In 2011, the ship was renamed the Col. James M. Schoonmaker museum ship. It was relocated to the marina district as part of the National Museum of The Great Lakes.

The Schoonmaker re-opened for tours on Saturday for the first time in three years.

The ship was built in 1911 and was originally christened the Col. James M. Schoonmaker before the name was changed to the Willis B. Boyer.

Volunteers were also being recruited to work on the ship as well as the museum, which opens next spring.

"It's a blend of artifacts and hands on exhibits which is different from maritime museums. Typically, they're artifact based. This is bringing on the hands on component as well,' said Anna M. Kolin, of the museum.

The museum is re-locating to Toledo from Vermillion, OH.
