NEWBERRY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Deputies said a body was recovered from Heller's Creek in Newberry County on Saturday.

Divers from Newberry and Union counties located the body at 4:30 p.m. a short distance from where the man went missing, according to the Newberry County Sheriff's Office.

The Newberry County coroner identified the victim as Christian Eugene Pearson, of Whitmire, SC. The cause of death was asphyxia caused by drowning, according to the coroner.

The Newberry County Sheriff's Office said the Pearson was on an outing with family members at the creek and waded through shallow waters into deeper waters at the bridge on Broad River Road.

Once in the deeper water, Pearson began having difficulty swimming and slipped under the water, according to the sheriff's office.

Deputies said family members tried to find and rescue him, but were unsuccessful.

No foul play is expected, and SCDNR is handling the investigation, according to deputies.
