TEMPE, AZ (CBS5) -

At least one person was arrested following protests along Mill and University avenues Saturday night in Tempe.

Several protesters are calling for Congress to reject a pending strike against Syria.

Counter-protesters demand swift action against the Bashar al-Assad regime, accused of recent chemical attacks on its own people.

"Something needs to be done because this tyrant will not stop the killing," Zaki Lababibi said.

Despite some chants for swift military action, more joined protesters on a march against a military strike on Syria, including a former soldier and veteran of the Iraq Wars.

"I don't want anymore people being killed for no reason," Daniel Spottiswood said.

Spottiswood fears another conflict in the Middle East will claim the lives of more soldiers if Congress chooses to get involved.

"I don't want to do this again, I've the rhetoric before I recognize it this time," Spottiswood said. "I know what's going to happen."

Dozens more joined the march against a Syrian conflict and tensions came to a boiling point with police, resulting in at least one person being taken into police custody.

The White House formally asked Congress to authorize a military strike as Congress wraps up its August recess.
