An Anderson County family is blaming ill treatment of their family dog by Animal Control officers for its death.

Audrea Summerall said her 10-year-old Boston Terrier named Penny died after being left in the back of an animal control officer's truck with no water for more than an hour.

Summerall said on Tuesday afternoon officers took Penny into custody because it was not on a leash while being walked by neighbors. Summerall said when officers finally returned the dog it had suffered a heat stroke while in the officer's truck.

"My dog was lying there lifeless and I said 'Penny, Penny' and he didn't respond," said Summerall. " And the only water in that truck was the water that man [Animal Control officer] was drinking."

Summerall said she was told by the officer to take Penny to a veterinarian, but she said by the time the dog was able to be seen, it was too late.

The Anderson County Sheriff's Office released a statement to FOX Carolina saying the dog was in "distress" when it was picked up by the Animal Control officer. The statement also said that the sheriff's office was in the process of gathering more information from the veterinarian that treated Penny before he died.

The sheriff's office said Penny's owner has also filed a complaint, "Indicating that the officer was responsible for the dog's death."

A sheriff's representative said they should have more information to release on the investigation into this incident later this week.
