CLINTON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Clinton police said they are investigating an accident after a pedestrian was hit by a train Thursday morning.

Clinton Public Safety Director Robin Morse said a man was walking in the middle of the tracks when he was hit before 7:30 a.m. near the intersection of Broad Street and U.S. 76.

Morse said the man was airlifted to the hospital in Greenville but did not have any other information about his condition. He said the man was conscious when he was found and taken to the hospital.

The victim is a local and has a cup of coffee by the tracks every morning, but was seen walking along them for the first time Thursday, Morse said.

He said the CSX train honked the horn several times and was going less than 25 mph when it hit the man.

The train had departed and the scene cleared by 9:30 a.m., according to FOX Carolina crews.
