ASHEVILLE, NC (AP) -

The chief of a fire department in Buncombe County has been fired after being arrested on a drunken driving charge.

Enka-Candler Fire and Rescue Chief Tim Rayburn was fired after his arrest last week.

Chairman Max Queen of the fire department's board of directors says the board acted Tuesday night. Queen says he cannot talk about the situation. He says the department is looking for a new chief.

Assistant chief Josh Howard will serve as interim chief until a permanent replacement is found.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol charged Rayburn Aug., 28 with driving while impaired in a marked fire department SUV. Troopers say the 57-year-old Rayburn's blood alcohol level was nearly four times the legal limit.
