CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -
A College of Charleston student was killed during a road trip to Virginia over the weekend, and one of his fraternity brothers is facing a felony DUI charge in the crash, authorities say.
Franklin West, 18. was killed Friday while traveling to the University of Virginia with four of his Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity brothers, according to the College of Charleston.
It happened around 3:30 p.m. Friday, in the northbound lanes of Interstate 95 near Manning. Troopers say 18-year-old Henry Sims Farr was driving a 2001 Land Rover when he drove off the left side of the road, and hit a tree.
The Land Rover overturned, and West, originally from Alexandria, Virginia, was killed. The other four occupants in the SUV were taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Farr is charged with felony DUI, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of marijuana. He's been released from the Clarendon County Detention Center on bond.
West is listed as a sophomore on the university's website, and Farr is listed as a freshman.
The fraternity house, located on Wentworth Street, was adorned with flowers over the weekend. West's visitation is scheduled for Tuesday at 5 p.m. at the J. Henry Stuhr Chapel in downtown Charleston.
