Baby Shower & More Swaddle Stress!

Posted: Updated:

Stella and I had a nice time at morning anchor Lauren Elise's shower!  In fact, it was held at my home, and Summer Gagnon orchestrated all the food and decor.  It really turned out to be a fun event.  Lauren got lots of great gifts, including an awesome little rocker chair from Diana Watson (it saved me with Stella in the early days, and she still likes sitting in it!) and some great little outfits. I've become such a fan on the classic onesie... I hope Stella can wear those for many years to come LOL! Lauren is going to make a wonderful mom, and her baby boy is going to know a LOT about baseball and football thanks to his proud papa Chad!

Having Stella at the shower was good! It was the first time she's attended a party with me!  She enjoyed the attention, but she reaches her limit on people/noise/excitement after about 10-15 mins.  So, at those points I'd take her upstairs to hang out with her dad while he watched college football.  Amazingly, Summer and Joe's little girl Sydney just thrived on the excitement from the party.  She never seemed to get tired of it, until the very end when she had to take a power nap!  Our news director's son Cam was laid back through the whole thing.

The night before the shower was a monumental night for Stella, so it's no wonder that she wasn't too keen on being at the party for long stints.  Stella slept without being swaddled for the entire night on Friday night!  It was not an easy night, especially for my husband.  While I was covering our game of the week at Greer High, Brannon was putting Stella to bed.  He left her unswaddled and she took a few mins to fall asleep.  She slept for about 2 hours, but around the time the 10pm news started she woke up... and CRIED.  He texted back and forth with me about what to do, and we decided to let her fuss it out for a while.  It was torture for him, and I'm thankful I wasn't there.  I would have buckled after a few mins and grabbed her up, but he stuck to his guns.  After about 40 min, she fell back asleep... and slept STRAIGHT THROUGH TO 5AM!  So, all the books were right... after a good long cry she slept very well. I'm grateful that my husband stuck it out, and spared me having to hear her cry for so long.  He told me that if she cried for 5 more mins he would have gone in... Luckily that didn't happen.  She's been sleeping pretty well unswaddled ever since, but she does have her fits of fussiness occasionally.  They seem to be getting better and better though.

Do you have a cry-it-out story?  Or can you tell me how you ultimately got your baby to settle down during the night?  I'm still struggling with the night wakings, but it's only 1 or 2 now.  Thanks for all of your wonderful feedback so far.  I've found some great books, ideas, and comfort from your comments and emails!
