Injured war veteran gets surprise of a lifetime

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

An injured war veteran and his family got the surprise of a lifetime.  Initially the couple thought they were going to an interview to be contestants to win a brand new house through operation "Finally Home."

Applause and emotion got the best of US Air Force Staff Sergeant Robert Wright, when he and his family arrived at the lot he will soon call home.

"I think it just hit me all at once. I didn't even know how to hold it in," said Staff Sgt. Wright.

Through operation "Finally Home," Wright was chosen to receive a new house in North Charleston, a place he and his family can feel comfortable.

"It's going to take a ton of weight off finances and the quality of life," said Wright.

Wright joined the Air Force in 1997 and served multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, but his toughest battle was still ahead. In 2012, a mass was discovered on Wright's brain.

"I've had three brain surgeries and it's basically pain management right now," said Wright.

Over the last 9 months, Wright's condition hasn't improved, but consistently deteriorated. This new home opens new life and new hope for his family.

"To have this house is just amazing to us to know that if something was to happen, the kids and I would be taken care of," said Wright's wife Bethany.

"Seeing them enter their home site this morning for the ground breaking, it was an emotional time," said William Cutler with Pulte Group.

Pulte Group began construction immediately on the home and hopes to have it complete in December, customizing every nook and cranny specifically to the Wright's needs.

"They've earned this home and we just have a special obligation and privilege to provide that home" said Cutler.

This decorated war veteran and his family can now breathe a sigh of relief, knowing the smell of fresh paint and a new beginning is just a few short months away.

Local contractors, vendors and housing partners donated everything to this home including materials and all labor. The size of the home is just a little more than 2700 square feet.

Operation Finally Home is a program created to support our troops. Their mission is to provide custom made mortgage free homes to wounded and disabled veterans and widows of fallen military, so they may succeed from the battlefield to the home front.
