A 23-year-old man was sentenced on Wednesday for felony drunken driving that resulted in a crash that killed a person, according to the solicitor.
Nicholas Chavez-Ortiz was sentenced to 16 years after he pleaded guilty to two counts of felony driving under the influence, one resulting in death and one resulting in great bodily injury, according to Solicitor Walk Wilkins.
Chavez-Ortiz also pleaded guilty to possession of cocaine, Wilkins said.
On July 13, Chavez-Ortiz was driving his Ford F-150 at a high rate of speed when he crashed into a car that contained a married couple. The man died less than a month after the accident and his wife was seriously injured.
Chavez-Ortiz's blood alcohol level was .17 percent, according to Wilkins. He said law enforcement also found an open beer can in his truck and two baggies of cocaine.
