Christians Boycott Dog Daze Festival (FOX Carolina)
WOODRUFF, SC (FOX Carolina) -
An upstate festival is being threatened with a boycott over alcohol.
It's happening in Woodruff, where a new ordinance is allowing beer and wine to be sold at some city functions, including this weekends "Dog Daze Festival" and not everyone's happy about it.
Including one main street business owner who put a sign up that says, "Christians Boycott Dog Daze Festival."
City leaders say this sign is dividing the community, but the lady who put it here says its supposed to do just the opposite."
Grace Sloan runs the 'Hair on Mane' beauty shop where the sign is displayed and says she put it there because the city has decided to allow alcohol sales at the festival something she says goes against her faith.
"It's not that I hate people that drink, I don't, but I think alcohol destroys, and I don't want to be around it, and I want a place where we can bring our children," Sloan told FOX Carolina.
Sloan said she got the idea for the boycott after city council passed an ordinance allowing alcohol sales at the festival.
"I would hope that people do not boycott the event, its a two day event and there's more to it than beer and wine," said Stephanie Tillerson, Woodruff's city manager.
Tiller's son says alcohol will be sold and consumed at the festival in one designated area, but also wants to point out that there will be a strong police presence.
The dog daze event that will feature rides, magic shows and various dog competition.
Event organizers say that no alcohol will be served at the event on Sunday. The dog daze festival kicks off Saturday, September 14th at 10 am.
