Former Gamecocks head coach, state senator dies at 89

COLUMBIA, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Former University of South Carolina head football coach Warren Giese has died at age 89, according to university officials.

Officials said Giese died Thursday.

Giese coached the Gamecocks to 28 wins from 1956 to 1960.

Officials say Giese's wins are the eighth-most all-time at South Carolina.

Giese's best season came in 1958 when he led the Gamecocks to a 7-3 record.

Giese was also a South Carolina senator.

He also served in the Navy.

Giese is survived by his wife Phyllis and four children, according to a media release.
