SC hopes extra road money will help bridges

Posted: Updated:

South Carolina is setting aside an additional $1 billion for its roads over the next decade, and officials plan to use part of it to get some of the state's worst bridges replaced or repaired more quickly.

Department of Transportation spokesman Pete Poore says exact plans haven't been hashed out yet because money is just coming in.

An Associated Press review found that 38 South Carolina bridges are considered both fracture critical and structurally deficient. Experts call that combination of red flags particularly problematic.

The state has finished replacing one of the bridges, and two more projects are nearly finished. The DOT is in the design or early engineering phase of replacing four more of the bridges.

Poore says bridges on the list are inspected more closely and remain safe.
