Police: Spartanburg officer crushed by own patrol car

SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A Spartanburg police officer is recovering at the hospital after he was injured when his patrol car door crushed him as it rolled away, according to a police spokesman.

Capt. Art Littlejohn with Spartanburg Public Safety said an officer had pulled a car over near Church and St. John streets about 3 a.m. Sunday, but when the officer got of the car, he forgot to put it in park.

The car started to roll backwards, so the officer chased after it and managed to get in but the door hit a tree, crushing the officer in between, Littlejohn said.

The officer suffered a head and arm injury, underwent surgery and is conscious Monday, Littlejohn said.

He said the officer was trying to keep the car from rolling into traffic and that is why he chased after it and jumped in.

The Highway Patrol was investigating the wreck.
