An ongoing custody dispute over a 4-year-old Cherokee girl in Oklahoma has entered another courtroom.
Dusten Brown of Oklahoma has been fighting a South Carolina couple, Matt and Melanie Capobianco, for custody of Veronica. Brown is Veronica's biological father while the Capobiancos are her adoptive parents. They have taken their fight to a Tulsa courtroom this week.
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in June that Brown, a member of the Cherokee Nation, couldn't use the Indian Child Welfare Act in his fight for custody.
A South Carolina court then finalized Veronica's adoption by the Capobiancos and two Oklahoma courts have certified the adoption order. Brown has appealed to the Oklahoma Supreme Court.
A gag order in the case prevents both sides from speaking about it and court records are sealed.
