SC prosecutor Wilson testifies on health care

Posted: Updated:

South Carolina's top prosecutor says he's concerned citizens' personal information isn't being properly protected as they sign up for insurance under the federal health care overhaul.

Attorney General Alan Wilson testified Wednesday before a joint hearing of two U.S. House panels.

Wilson was among 13 attorneys general who wrote to Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius regarding security concerns with the so-called navigator program.

South Carolina's Republican leadership has staunchly opposed the federal law. But Wilson says his testimony wasn't about the law's merits.

The federal government has given grants to more than 100 nonprofits and other groups to hire "navigators" to help people sign up for coverage under the law.

Wilson says Congress should put in place safeguards to protect personal information when people consult with navigators.
