FOREST CITY, NC (FOX Carolina) -

A Forest City man is dead and his friend, Clemson sophomore defensive tackle Carlos Watkins, is recovering following a crash Saturday night in Rutherford County, according to state troopers with the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the two men were passengers in a Dodge Durango that was being driven by a 19 –year old male.

Troopers said the driver lost control of the vehicle while making a left turn, causing the vehicle to slide off the road and into an electrical pole, snapping it in half, and causing live power lines to fall on top of the vehicle.

The victim, Dache Gossett, 21, died at the scene after he was ejected from the truck, according to troopers.

Troopers said Watkins, 19, remained trapped in the vehicle for more than an hour and a half while Duke Energy crews worked to shut off the power line and emergency responders fought to extract the 300 lb., 6'3" football player, troopers said.

Watkins was taken to the hospital but is doing OK, troopers said.

The driver was not hurt, but troopers said they will meet with the Rutherford County District Attorney on Tuesday to determine if he will face any charges related to the crash.

Clemson University head coach Dabo Swinney said in a media conference that he spoke to Watkins Sunday night, and said the sophomore was not badly hurt.

"We are very fortunate that Carlos Watkins is okay," Swinney said. "He was in a very serious car wreck last night. Fortunately he is okay. We expect him to probably be back here (on Monday)."

Swinney said he and the team will rally around Watkins as he grieves the loss of his friend, who died in the crash.
