Hampden County District Attorney Mark Mastroianni has been nominated for federal judgeship by President Barack Obama.
Mastroianni is one of two people who will be sent to the Senate Judiciary Committee for confirmation. Indira Talwani of Boston has been nominated as well for Eastern Mass.
Obama said the two "demonstrate the talent, expertise and fair-mindedness Americans expect and deserve from their judicial system."
U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren commissioned an advisory committee that recommended Mastroianni and Talwani. She said,"Both nominees are talented and highly respected practitioners with diverse professional backgrounds, strong ties to the community, and impressive legal careers".
Mastroianni first applied for federal judgeship back in June.
In a statement issued to CBS 3, he said, "I am completely humbled and honored for President Obama and grateful for Senator Warren. It is important for the people to know I will remain committed to my job as district attorney while the Senate Judiciary Committee considers the nomination."
Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno said he believes the DA is the man for the position.
"I'm happy for Mark. It's a once and a life time opportunity," said Sarno.
It could be some time before Mastroianni receives confirmation.
Sarno said during that time, he hopes the judicial process continues at the Hampden County Courthouse to keep criminals off the streets.
"We need to make sure that these individuals are held and make sure that there is swift punishment," said Sarno.
Sarno said he also hopes whoever is appointed by Gov. Deval Patrick to fill the DA's position will continue his legacy of strong prosecution.
"I'm sure that person will continue to have a good working relationship with the Springfield Police Department, myself and the State Police Department."
If confirmed, Mastroianni will replace Judge Michael Ponsor at the U.S. District Court in Springfield.
Mastroianni has been the district attorney in Hampden County since 2011.
