Threat forces evacuation of community college in Springfield

Posted: Updated:

An unidentified threat caused officials at Springfield Technical Community College to evacuate the campus as a precaution Tuesday. Students started leaving the campus at about 11:20 a.m. as state police stood guard at the gates.

An alert was sent out by the school to all students. All classes were canceled and traffic was tied up for more than 30 minutes as students left the campus.

Authorities were not saying how they received the message or what the specific threat was.

At about 5 p.m. Tuesday, the STCC website had an announcement that all classes would resume as scheduled on Wednesday.

Holyoke Community College was evacuated Monday after an employee found a threatening note inside a building on campus. Nothing was found and the campus was open Tuesday.

State prosecutors said making a threat against a school was a felony offense, carrying a maximum prison sentence of 20 years and a maximum fine of $10,000. If convicted, the person or group could also be required to pay restitution for any expenses incurred because of the threat.
