Fire on Georgetown riverfront contained

GEORGETOWN, SC (AP) -

A fire that ripped through the waterfront business district in Georgetown has been contained.

Georgetown Mayor Jack Scoville said that by midmorning Wednesday firefighters seemed to have the blaze under control.

He says six or seven businesses in the riverfront shopping and dining district are considered total losses. Seven families who lived in apartments above the buildings lost everything.

Authorities said the blaze was first reported about 5:30 a.m., possibly starting in a restaurant, and spread to several buildings nearby buildings.

Several streets in the city's historic district have been blocked while firefighters battle the blaze.

Crews from five area fire departments as well as the Coast Guard responded to the scene.

There have been no reports of injuries.
