Moped driver dies in Laurens Co. crash

CLINTON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A moped driver died after a crash with a SUV along U.S. 76 in Laurens County Thursday night, according to troopers.

Troopers said the wreck happened near Bethlehem Church Road just before 8:30 p.m. between Laurens and Joanna.

The moped driver was taken to the hospital, where he later died, troopers said. They said he was not wearing a helmet. An witness said a helicopter landed nearby to airlift the victim to the hospital.

The SUV's driver was not injured, according to the Highway Patrol.

The coroner's office identified the moped driver as 52-year-old John Whitney, of Joanna.

Troopers did not release any other details about the wreck and said the crash remains under investigation.
