CLEMSON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Bill McLellan, who served as Clemson University's athletic director for 14 years, has died at age 81.

McLellan, originally from Dillon, SC, passed away Monday morning at Greenville Memorial Hospital

McLellan served as Director of Athletics from 1971-85, during which Clemson won 34 ACC Championships in nine different sports, including 45 top 25 teams and 27 ACC championships from 1978-85.

While McLellan served as AD, the football team won the 1981 National Championship, was ranked in the top 20 in the nation five times and won three ACC Championships.

He also played a vital role in expanding Memorial Stadium, overseeing the building and financing of the stadium's South upper deck in 1978 and the North upper deck in 1983. It was also his plan to add 100 luxury boxes to help pay for the projects.

In May, the North Deck was named in his honor.

McLellan brought in the first female teams to the university, creating eight women's programs between 1975-77.

He also hired legendary Clemson coaches including Danny Ford.

Not only did McLellan serve as AD, but he played football for Clemson from 1951-54 while he studied agronomy. After working in the department of agricultural economics once he received his masters, McLellan began with the athletic department in the business office under Frank Howard in 1958 and later moved into coaching.

McLellan took over as AD from Howard in 1971.

After leaving Clemson, he took over as Director of Athletics at Southern Mississippi in 1986 until he retired in 1998. He was inducted into the Southern Mississippi Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001 and into the Clemson Athletic Hall of Fame in 1993. In May, he was inducted into the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame.

McLellan is survived by his wife Ann and children Suzy, Bill, Cliff and Arch Anna.

A memorial service for McLellan will be held at 12 p.m., Thursday, in the Sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church, Greenville. A graveside service will be held in Woodland Cemetery "Cemetery Hill" on the campus at 3 PM Thursday.

A representative of Clemson University said memorials may be made to the Bill McClellan Memorial IPTAY Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 1529, Clemson, SC 29633.
