ASHEVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) -

Police have charged an Asheville man in connection with the fatal shooting of his two neighbors in the Arden community.

Asheville police said they found a couple dead in the driveway of their Birch Lane home on Monday and they took the suspect into custody at the scene.

Police said they charged Erwin Jarvis, 59, with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the shooting of the couple, who they identified as Robert Matheson III, 54, and Genise Matheson, 50.

Police said the Mathesons' 12-year-old was inside their home at the time of the shooting but was not harmed. He is now in Department of Social Services custody, police said.

Jarvis lived next door to the Mathesons, according to police.

Police said there were numerous complaints filed between the neighbors about each other.

"It appears that there was a well documented history of trouble between these two neighbors, and to my knowledge, it goes back to 2008, 2009," said Sgt. Dave Romick with Asheville police.

Jarvis is being held in jail without bond.
