Scam artists rob elderly Mentor man of diamond ring, rare gold coins
MENTOR, OH (WOIO) -
Mentor police are looking for the scam artists who robbed an elderly man at his home.
It happened Monday afternoon at 3:50 p.m. on Forest Lane.
According to police, a woman knocked on the door of an 81-year-old resident claiming to represent a tree trimming business. She asked him to show her his back yard, and both of them went outside.
Soon afterward, a home health aid arrived and found a man inside of the home coming out of a bedroom. The man also claimed to be from the tree trimming service. When the home health aid went out to verify this with the resident, the suspects immediately left.
The elderly resident later discovered that a diamond ring, several rare gold coins and several older $100 bills had been stolen from his bedroom. The total loss was over $35,000.
The suspects were driving a newer silver or white SUV with a rear lift door. She is described as white woman with a small frame, brunette hair and she did not speak English well. The man is described as white or Hispanic with a darker complexion, about 5'8" tall with a stocky build.
