PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT) -

A 76-year-old man has passed away, while his wife continues to fight for her life after a house fire in Petersburg Monday night, according to relatives.

Samuel Edward Tucker, known as Sammy, and his wife Dolores were both found unconscious inside their home in the 2400 block of Merryoaks Avenue around 10:45 p.m. Monday after a fire broke out in the back of the home.

Sammy was taken to VCU Medical Center's trauma center for burn treatment, according to fire officials. However, Sammy's son, Larry Tucker, says his father has passed away.

"I just told him how much I loved him too and we'll get through it," said Tucker.

He added that his mother and father both loved to fish and go for rides in the car.

Dolores Tucker, 76, remains at Southside Regional Medical Center and is on a ventilator according to family members.

"I went over there," said Arnette Dean, a family member. "She fighting. I told her she best fight. I told her come on back to us Tosh."

Larry Tucker believes his father may have died trying to help save his wife's life.

Firefighters managed to get the blaze under control in about an hour. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Though, family members say a faulty wire may be to blame.

"I think he was really trying to help and that's why he sustained what he sustained," said Tucker. "Because he was trying to get back to the bedroom to my mother. They found him in the hallway."

A dog and two cats died during the fire. The fire is estimated to have caused over $45,000 in structure damage.
