DHEC: WIC threatened by gov't shutdown

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBIA, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) said on Tuesday that a program offered to mothers and children will be affected by the government shutdown.

The Women, Infant and Children (WIC) program will be discontinued on Oct. 15 unless the USDA releases funds, according to DHEC.

DHEC said they were informed that the WIC program is considered "non-essential" and will not receive federal funding if the shutdown continues.

WIC clients should continue using their vouchers as usual, and vendors should continue to honor the vouchers, DHEC said.

DHEC said they are monitoring the WIC program's funding and will update the public when new information is available.
