Locals using recreation areas despite shutdown

Posted: Updated:
TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Recreation areas like Sabino Canyon at the Coronado National Forest have shut down, but that has not stopped hikers and bikers from using the trails.

Visitor centers, ranger offices and concession stands have closed until further notice at recreation areas until Congress can pass a budget. Additionally, camping is not allowed. People who have already set up tent have been given a two day warning to leave.

National Parks are also being impacted. Locally, Saguaro National Park is one of 401 parks across the country that has shut down. The National Park Service is expected to lose about $450,000 a day while parks remain closed. 68 out of 79 Saguaro National Park employees have been furloughed, meaning they will not be getting paid until a budget is passed.

Some hikers and bikers we spoke with at Sabino Canyon Tuesday afternoon say they did not see much of a difference. However, some were bothered with restroom closures.
