FOUNTAIN INN, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Fountain Inn police and the Greenville County coroner are investigating a fatal shooting that happened late Tuesday night.

Greenville County deputies said the shooting happened on Third Street just after 10 p.m.

Coroner Parks Evans said 25-year-old Barry Norman, of Woodside Avenue, was shot and taken to Greenville Memorial Hospital, where he died.

Police said witnesses reported hearing several gunshots and seeing two people run away from the corner of Third Street and Woodside Avenue.

The surrounding region was then shut down as police, deputies and search dogs saturated the area to look for the suspects, blocking off roads to set up a perimeter in the manhunt.

"All the dogs ended at the same location, so that kind of tells us they could have gotten into a vehicle at that point and the trail ended," said Lt. Tim Ridgeway with the Greenville County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said the active manhunt was called off after hours of searching early Wednesday morning.

Fountain Inn Police Chief Keith Morton said Norman was looking around the corner and was hit by a stray round as shots rang out. He said Norman was at his cousin's house at the time of the shooting.

Investigators are reviewing surveillance from area businesses and talking again with witnesses as they continue to follow up on the fatal shooting, Morton said.

Evans said Norman's death is considered a homicide, though his cause of death is pending the results of additional tests. He said Norman was shot in the head.

No description of the suspects has been given.
