Two Upstate churches merge

GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

It's not uncommon to hear about churches splitting and forming two different congregations. But, members at one church said they want to promote unity.

To do that, The Rev. Matt Rogers and Donny Mathis said they stepped out on faith.

"We're hoping that this model provides a picture to the city of what churches can do if they work together," Rogers said.

He's one of three pastors at a new church in Greenville County.

"Covenant Grace Baptist Church and Renewal Church are now The Church at Cherrydale," Rogers said.

He used to be the pastor at Renewal Church, but after he met Mathis, a deacon at Covenant Grace, the two decided to become one and merge.

"It became a very exciting thing very fast," Mathis said. "The gaps that we had in the ministries that God has given us, fit together quite perfectly."

The two men said through prayer and a vote from both churches' members the old church building known as Covenant Grace on State Park Road, became The Church at Cherrydale.

"So, one of the desires of the church and Christians in a city like Greenville, is that we would be united," Rogers said.

They said the name shows promise for new beginnings in the community.

"We've learned a lot about give and take," Mathis said.

And they said they hope their spiritual path is one others will follow.

"God's got amazing things in store for us in the future," Mathis said.

Church members had their first service under their new name last Sunday. Members said service starts every Sunday at 10:15 a.m.
