More than 60 of South Carolina's Army National Guard units are delaying their normal weekend training drills because of the partial government shutdown.
But the state's Air National Guard F-16 fighter wing is taking to the skies over Eastover to prepare for an upcoming deployment in spite of the political turmoil in Washington.
Guard spokesman Sgt. 1st Class Joe Cashion says 67 units were slated to drill this weekend. That is a majority of the state's 11,000 Guardsmen and women. But Guard leaders have decided to postpone those drills until the third weekend in October.
An exception allows the 169th Fighter Wing based at McEntire Joint National Guard Base to train since they are preparing for an upcoming deployment.
