Food bank makes emergency delivery for Bridgeport children

BRIDGEPORT, CT (WFSB) -

An emergency delivery of food was made to a program for children in Bridgeport who have been affected by the government shutdown.

Officials said the federally-funded Head Start program at Action for Bridgeport Community Development was forced to close its doors due to the shutdown.

For every day the shutdown continues, officials said, 1,200 children do not have access to meals normally provided by ABCD.

"Even today, he asked am I going to school today daddy," said Francis Turkson of Bridgeport. "What am I going to tell him?"

Turkson's 3-year-old Gabriel was one of the first targets of the government shutdown as the ABCD acted as the only form of child care for the family. 

"They look to us for answers and we don't  have them," said Monette Ferguson, who is the ABCD Early Learning Director. "Not only answers but food, safety, even if it's just a nap or a hug from a teacher. That hasn't happened all week."

Turkson said he did not know where to go next for help.

"Is it going to have an end to this or not," said Turkson, who has been turned down from one job to another. "If you don't know what you're doing with your life, then what else do you do?"

On Friday afternoon, Connecticut Food Bank, through the support of Our Family Foundation at Stop & Shop, delivered 17,000 nutritious, healthy food items for the children who attend ABCD.

The food will be handed out starting Monday.

"The food alone cannot help. The kids need education," said Turkson. "They talk about no kid left behind, no child left behind and now they shut the schools down."
