SPINDALE, NC (FOX Carolina) -

A man has been charged after a security guard was gunned down outside of a club in Spindale in late September, according to the Spindale Police Department.

Police announced on Friday that Dedrick Shamar Washington, 19, was charged with murder in connection to the killing of a security guard outside of Mingle City Sports Bar & Grill in Spindale.

Police said the victim, Jeffrey James, saved the lives of others at the club before he was shot.

The incident started with an altercation in the club that became physical and James took those involved outside, police said.

Washington, who was involved in the altercation, went to his car, got a gun and went back to the door of the club, according to police.

Police said James saw Washington coming and began to move patrons back into the bar and out of harm's way.

According to police, Washington fired at least eight rounds and one fatally struck James in the neck.

"We express our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Jeffrey Lee James. I had the pleasure to know Jeff for quite a few years. He was truly a fine man. He was a true servant; to our country through his military service, to his community through his work with our youth and to his fellow man through the lives he saved that night. He was an American hero," said R.A. McIntosh, chief of police.
