NC Republican convention coming to Cherokee resort

RALEIGH, NC (AP) -
The North Carolina Republican Party is holding its convention next June in the hotel right next to the casino operated by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.
The party announced this week the state convention will go to the Harrah's Cherokee Casino Resort for the first time. The party's central committee previously decided on the venue.
Going to a facility that also offers gambling could give social conservatives opposed to the state lottery and expanded Cherokee casino gambling approved last year some pause.
Party executive director Todd Poole said Friday the casino is separated from the hotel by a skywalk and those at the convention will not have to see gambling. He says the resort is one of a few in the state that can handle such a convention.
