Western MA residents falling victim to healthcare scams

Posted: Updated:
HOLYOKE, MA (WSHM) -

Holyoke police are getting a number of calls about medical insurance scams.

CBS 3 reported last week there are fake websites for the Affordable Care Act enrollment across the country.

Now some are hitting Western Mass. The scammers ask for money and social security numbers.

Police say several local residents have fallen victim.

For those who have questions about how to sign up for coverage, there are people who can help.

"In the state of Massachusetts, there are certified application counselors at many of the area hospitals. Baystate financial counselors at all three hospitals have been certified. There are also navigators throughout the state. These are outreach financial counselors throughout the state that are available to anyone who has questions at all," said Andrea Riendeau, director of access services at Baystate Medical Center.

Those who are contacted over the phone about personal information should hang up.

The correct website to visit to sign up for Obamacare is healthcare.gov.

Those who fall victim to fake websites should visit fraud.com to report it.
